Chocolate + hazelnut is a favorite combo!
âž¡ Nutella is a smooth chocolate-hazelnut spread from northern Italy, a region known for its hazelnuts. It grew out of a postwar idea to make expensive cocoa go further by blending it with ground nuts.
➡ In Europe, Nutella is an everyday breakfast or snack. It gets spread on bread and toast, rolled into croissants, folded into crêpes, or paired with fruit. The simplest version is the classic Italian pane e Nutella ~ bread and Nutella.
âž¡ I’m taking that jar of chocolate hazelnut spread into new territory, with Nutella desserts ranging from no-churn ice cream to liqueur!

Choosing your chocolate hazelnut spread
Chocolate hazelnut spreads can vary quite a bit in sweetness, texture, and hazelnut flavor. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose the best one for your Nutella desserts.
Nutella is the classic: very smooth, sweet, with a famously thick mouthfeel. Sugar and palm oil are its first two ingredients, and it’s the palm oil that helps give it that especially silky, stable texture.
Bonne Maman is palm oil-free and made with natural vanilla. It has a looser texture than Nutella, tastes slightly less sweet, and lets the hazelnut flavor come through more clearly. Many people prefer its flavor to Nutella.
Nocciolata is organic and also palm-oil-free, with a slightly more balanced flavor and a softer, less perfectly uniform texture.
Homemade chocolate hazelnut spread gives you the same thick, smooth, creamy consistency as Nutella, and you control the ingredients. No palm oil, not too much sugar…and I toast the hazelnuts for amazing flavor.
Which is best?
That depends on what matters most to you. Nutella is the classic choice and the one I used in these recipes. Bonne Maman has a stronger hazelnut flavor and is made without palm oil, while Nocciolata is a good organic option. My homemade version has the smooth texture and versatility of Nutella, but with a deeper, fresher flavor.
Any of these chocolate hazelnut spreads will work well for spreading, filling, swirling, or baking, so choose the one whose flavor and ingredients appeal to you most.
